Julgransplundring (Christmas tree plundering)
"Julgransplundring" is a tradition that involves "undressing" and the "throwing out" of the Advent and Christmas Decorations. In Sweden this usually is done at “tjugondag Knut” (20days after Xmas; on Knut's names day), which falls on January 13. However nowadays people hold the julgransplunding on any nearby day.
The traditional Christmas tree is "thrown out", while the plastic Christmas tree and other Christmas decorations are put away to be reused on the next Xmas.
This tradition, have changed very little since the 1870s. It originated in that people hung apples and other treats in the Christmas tree for decorations. During "julgransplundring" the kids raided the Christmas tree on goodies, and devoured them.
"Julgransplundring" is usually seen as the end to the over a month-long period of Christmas celebration that begins with Advent, and continues with Lucia, Christmas and New Year. All around Sweden kindergartens, schools and community groups organises special "Julgransplundring" events that includes dancing around the Christmas tree, various games (raffles, fish pond, opening of filled crackers and emptying lolly filled braided hearts). This is also the time for demolishing (eating up) that lovely Gingerbread house!
Did you put lollies in your braided hearts in the Xmas tree? Time to eat it!
Before we pack away all of our Xmas items for this year it's time for a last XMAS SALE - 10% off all goodies and decorations on our Christmas Page (valid until the end of January 2014).
New Herring Flavours
The herring was finally released - only days before Xmas and a few lucky Wellington customers managed to get their hands on some before Xmas. Luckily Herring tastes nice any day of the summer and some of the Scandinavian Communities around New Zealand are starting to plan for various midsummer parties. How about inviting your Kiwi friends for a true Scandinavian midsummer party with the compulsory Herring and snaps ?
