Sillsallad/Herring Salad

A traditional dish on the Scandinavian smorgasbord.


  • 1 jar pickled herring (in onions or dill marinade)
  • 3 cold boiled potatoes
  • 5 sweet pickled beetroot
  • 2 apples
  • 1 pickled gherkin/cucumber
  • 2 Tbsp chopped onions
  • 100ml beetroot juice
  • 100 ml whipped cream
  • decoration (chopped egg, parsley/dill)


Cut all the ingredients into small cubes and mix everything except the whipped cream (which is mixed in soon before serving). Add beetroot juice for colouring and taste. Fold in the cream. Decorate with chopped eggs and chopped parsley or dill.
